Several miles of roads are owned and operated by the Virginia Department of Transportation, thus ranking it the nation's 3rd largest state highway system. The road transportation in Virginia comprises of several interstate highways, state routes, bridges and tunnels. VDOT is determined to ensure safe, convenient and excellent transportation and also to provide easy connectivity to various cities and states.

The important Interstate Highways in Virginia are Interstate 95, Interstate 85, Interstate 81, Interstate 77, Interstate 66, and Interstate 64. The interstate highways form an important part of inter-regional corridors.

Interstate 95 - It starts from DC's border, Alexandria to North Carolina border, Skippers.

Interstate 85 - It route connects North Carolina border, Lake Gaston to Petersburg's I-95.

Interstate 81 - The route connects the Tennessee border, Bristol to West Virginia border, White Hall.

Interstate 77 - The route links the North Carolina border to the West Virginia border.

Interstate 66 - The highway links DC border, Arlington to I-81 at Middletown.

Interstate 64 - The route links I-664 in Suffolk to the West Virginia border.

Highway safety corridors

VDOT has implemented the Highway safety corridors to minimize traffic accident rates in high crash alert areas. Fines are imposed for speeding and other offenses. In Highway Safety Corridors, fines for speeding may amount up to $500 in. Criminal offenses related to driving under the influence or reckless driving may amount up to $2,500.

Adopt a Highway

The Adopt-A-Highway-Program provides a great opportunity for individuals, organizations, schools or businesses to help maintain cleanliness of all roads within the State Highway System and also plant trees or wildflowers, and helps remove graffiti, to make roads more appealing. All volunteers must be atleast 12 years old and those above 18 years must be under proper adult supervision. The program is a successful government-public partnership program and various schools, social groups, business entities and religious groups actively adopt and participate in the program. The program helps to keeps the state clean by effectively reminding people not to litter, and also assist in saving taxpayers’ money.

Bicycling and Walking

The Bicycle and Pedestrian Program has its mission to protect and improve safety and comfort of the bicyclists and pedestrians through the department’s practical policy, funding, and technical resources in bicycle transportation.

The main mission and goal of the scenic highway program is to safeguard and improve the natural scenic beauty of the highways of California including its adjacent corridors. The program adopts a special conservation treatment to protect the roads and all the corridors from encroachment such as junkyards, dumps, concrete plants, and gravel pits, proper landscaping or screening, prohibit billboards and graffiti , environmental friendly developments, regulate grading to prevent erosion alteration in contours, preserve important vegetative, hillsides, provide a local transportation vehicle to promote local tourism.

Virginia Bus Service


Virginia’s commuter bus services are provided by the Fairfax Connector. Fairfax County, Virginia provides a public bus service called Fairfax Connector and it is operated by MV Transportation under agreement. The organization manages a fleet of 253 buses and all diesel powered. The original routes of this bus service links the county's southern region to the Huntington Metro station bordering Alexandria.

Virginia Railway Express

The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) is a commuter rail serving regionally. The Northern Virginia Transportation Commission and the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission own VRE. VRE has 2 lines that link the Northern Virginia suburbs to Washington DC's Union Station.

Amtrak's Auto Train Service

Amtrak's Auto Train is a scheduled train service for passengers and their automobiles. The service links between Lorton in Virginia and Sanford, Florida. The Auto Train is one of its kind in the east that uses Superliner cars. Coach seats or sleeping car are available for passengers ride and their automobiles are carried in autotracks, an enclosed automobile-carrying freight cars.
